Within each series, a higher number generally indicates a step up in capability, but the exact product format and sheet size still matter.

That distinction helps buyers avoid two costly errors. An under-specified wiper can tear, saturate too quickly or require several sheets. An over-specified wiper may perform well but add unnecessary cost to routine jobs. THE FOUR DIFFERENCES THAT MATTER MOST

1  Strength when wet: A wiper that feels adequate when dry may weaken after absorbing fluid. X-Series cloths are designed to retain more integrity during demanding wet tasks. This matters when an operator needs to wipe, fold and continue working rather than discard a torn sheet.

2  Absorbency and fluid type: Water, oil and solvent-based fluids behave differently. Absorbency is not only the volume a sheet can hold; pickup speed and the material’s ability to release or retain fluid also affect the job. Check chemical compatibility before introducing a wipe into a solvent process.

3  Surface and friction: Smooth counters place little stress on a wiper. Castings, machinery and unfinished metal create more abrasion. Scrubbing dried residue or working around edges calls for greater tear resistance than collecting a simple water spill.

4  Expected use cycle: Some wipes are meant for one quick pass. Others can be folded to expose a clean face and used through a longer maintenance task. Extended use can reduce sheet consumption, but only when reuse within the task is safe and appropriate.

USE THE TASK TO CHOOSE THE GRADE

For light spray-and-wipe work, start in the L-Series. L10 can fit short, low-stress tasks such as small spills and detail wiping. Move upward when the wipe becomes saturated too quickly or the job requires a stronger, more towel-like material.

For maintenance and production work, begin by asking how much friction and fluid the wipe will encounter. X50 or X60 may cover moderate equipment wiping and routine lubricant cleanup. X70 supports longer or tougher wiping cycles. X80 is the heavy-duty choice when scrubbing, rough surfaces, grease or machine and parts cleaning would overwhelm a lighter sheet.

Format affects control and access. A portable box supports mobile maintenance; a high-capacity roll can make sense at a fixed, high-use station. Place the product where the work occurs so employees are less likely to grab an unsuitable substitute.

A BETTER PURCHASING TEST

Before changing products, select three representative tasks: one light, one routine and one demanding. Measure sheets per task, completion time, visible lint or residue, tearing and user feedback. If a lighter grade performs equally well, it can reduce spend. If a stronger grade cuts sheet use or rework, its higher unit price may be justified.

Also review packaging and storage. A wipe that performs well but is difficult to reach, exposed to dirt or located far from the work area will not deliver the expected result. Product grade and dispensing method should be selected together.
